Sun Odyssey 440 Monohull - Horizon Yacht Sales

A new generation yacht with free flowing innovative design

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440
Overview

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440

True innovation is rare in yacht design but the new Jeanneau walk-around yachts – including the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 – show revolutionary thinking that turns convention on its head. This range has a new hull design, an innovative deck plan outside, and ingenuity below. The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 was Sail Magazines Best 40-50ft Cruising Boat 2018 as well as European Yacht of the Year 2018 in the Family Cruiser category.

Some of the highlights of this fantastic monohull include:

  • A hard chine running the full length along the hull adds stability when sailing
  • A uniquely designed walk-round deck with gently sloping side decks
  • Unique cockpit design with the offset table and hinged coamings
  • Twin wheels, double rudder, electric winches, and choice of the sail plan
  • Fully air-conditioned, generator and choice of interior configurations

Rethinking outdoor living and innovative deck design

The new “walk-around” side deck slopes gently down towards the helm station on each side so that there is no more clambering over thwarts and coamings to get from cockpit to side deck – you simply walk around the helm. And the helm itself has forward-facing seats so you can helm without having to twist your body and crane your neck.

The coamings are now hinged so you can fold them out to make daybeds on either side. In the case of the starboard pad, it can extend all the way to the cockpit table (with a filler cushion). The cockpit table is also offset slightly allowing a straight walk-through passage even when one table leaves is open.

The twin wheels, wide split backstay, and extra-large swim platform offer easy boarding and clear access through to the companionway.

The engine start panel is incorporated into the central cockpit mould together with autopilot, steering compass and table/transom, and light controls. Add electric Harken winches operated directly from the cockpit and short-handed sailing easy, safe, and stress-free.

The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 Under power and sail

The standard engine is the Yanmar 45HP with shaft drive, but this can be upgraded to a 57HP. She generally handles well, but adding an optional bow thruster will make close-quarters manoeuvring and docking even easier. At 2000rpm on smooth water, she will do 6.5 knots happily and at 2200 rpm over 7 knots. 8.5 knots is the top speed.

A double-spreader Z-spar mast, standard mainsail with sail bag, and a 125 per cent genoa come as standard. There are no jib tracks on deck due to the use of friction rings on the headsail sheets. However, you can opt for in-mast furling and a self-tacking jib with a track just ahead of the mast for even easier sail handling.

The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 Below deck flexibility and style

The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 designed by Jean-Marc Piaton and Rafael Bonet the interior offers multiple configurations. There is an option for two, three or four cabins with one or two heads. The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 will appeal to larger groups or those looking to sail in spacious luxury.

The forward master cabin has double doors to access and when open it exacerbates the sense of space you get below. In the 2 and 3 cabin versions, all the berths have rectangular beds so regular household sheets will fit perfectly. In the two-cabin version, the aft cabin is to starboard with a huge storage/utility room area to port. This is lost when the third double cabin is added. The fourth cabin is created by dividing the forward section into two doubles.

In all versions there is a forward-facing chart table/Nav station is set to port and forward is the galley. The galley itself has a nice island with storage and also works as something to brace against underway. There are a three-burner stove and oven, double sink, freezer, and refrigerator. There is additional wine bottle storage under the flooring.

To starboard, there is a generous folding dining table with a central bench seat and there is plentiful storage under the seats. The table can also be lower to form an extra double berth and the light below is exceptional, with hull and deck port lights supplemented by multiple hatches.
