Outside style and deck layout
The Sun Odyssey 319 cockpit is well thought out with a foldaway cockpit table, a steering pedestal with a large instrument pod and single steering wheel with a good grab handle. (A folding wheel is an option). The seating is decent and generously proportioned with high cockpit coamings. The one-piece companionway washboard stows away neatly in a slot above the sliding companionway hatch which is a neat feature. The open transom gives a “performance dinghy” styling to the boat.
Sail controls are easily reached with the jib sheets led straight back to a pair of Harken cockpit winches either side of the helm. All control lines from the mast, including the mainsheet, are led to another pair of Harken winches on the coach-roof. There is a small, neat bridle forward of the companionway. There is an option for the double-ended German mainsheet arrangement, in which the tails are led to the cockpit winches.
The standard model features a deep draft 6 ft bulb keel with an option of a short-winged shoal draft keel with a centreboard that drops down. The twin rudders give good feel and make her a real joy to helm.
Sprayhood and bimini with led lighting are included and there is an electric windlass at the bow.
Under sail and power
The Seldén fractional rig supports aft-swept spreaders and carries a standard mainsail with Lazy bag and 110% genoa. But there is plenty of flexibility and choice of sail plan: a full battened mylar mainsail or a dacron in-mast furling mainsail are options, as is a self-tacking jib and spinnaker with bow sprite.
Harken winches are in easy reach, two primary and two on the coach-roof. With a full array of Raymarine electronics and all the sail controls led neatly to the cockpit she is a breeze to sail short-handed.
The Yanmar 21HP sail-drive delivers over 6 knots at 2,800 rpm and she is responsive and easy to handle under power. Top speed is around 7.8 knots.
Accommodation: Space and functionality.
The Sun Odyssey 319 living space below is very impressive given her overall size. The raised coach-roof gives headroom of 6ft 4in in the salon and through into the forward berth. Up forward there is a proper-sized V-berth that is perfect for two normal sized people. There is a good sized double berth aft to port with great vertical clearance over a large double berth, to starboard is a compact, but very adequate head.
The saloon has a conventional and functional layout with sufficient space for it to all work properly. There is a mass of natural light which adds to the spacious feel below. Two full-length settees, a drop-leaf centerline table, a compact L-shaped galley to port and a chart table to starboard. You use the starboard settee as a chart-table seat. There are a two-burner Eno stove and a large top-loading fridge. Counter space is limited to the top of the fridge and the covered sink, but it works well.
High-quality woodwork accents an incredibly bright, well-lit interior. Throughout the boat, there is decent storage and she is very comfortable for 4 people on a week or two’s charter or cruise.
