Mark 1 was a game changer, winning multiple awards. Mark 2 is even better.

Nautitech Open 40
Overview

“The Nautitech 40 Open is a refined boat, the result of an evolution that provides greater comfort and visibility while retaining the fine sailing qualities and cruising amenities of its predecessor. It would be hard to imagine a better multihull design in this particular market niche.”Sail Magazine.

Horizon Yacht Sales has a new owners version Nautitech 40 Open available now in the BVI. She was very popular at the Miami boat show and has now joined the Horizon Yacht Charters fleet based in Nanny Cay Marina, Tortola.

The Nautitech 40 Open features

In revenue terms, historically, the 3-cabin version has matched or even outperformed the 4-cabin version, so now you can have an owner’s layout and an excellent revenue stream. Choose your Management program, either split-revenue/ active management or a guaranteed income plan.

Award-Winning Design

The original (Mark 1) Nautitech 40 Open was a game-changer, winning multiple awards. This new upgraded Mark 2 Nautitech 40 launched last year, nominated for Sail magazines Best Boat of the Year 2019 is described as “hard to imagine a better multihull design in this particular market niche”.

New features include larger hull windows, distinctive grey Gelcoat detailing on the coach-roof and a spacious aft facing galley. She has many upgrades including generator, air conditioning, leather upholstery, cockpit enclosure, dual throttles, and sail upgrades. She is MCA category 4 compliant with all safety equipment, and full charter inventory. She is ready to charter and cruise immediately.

This 40 Open brings together onboard comfort with superb sailing performance.  Her construction is first class; different density foam cores are used, in combination with specific laminate specifications depending on the application and loading in different parts of the structure. This produces a very stiff, but impressively low displacement high performing catamaran.

Boat Handling

The 40 Open’s outboard helm position (both with biminis on this boat) has several advantages:

You can always helm from the favoured side, with good visibility and you are able to see all four corners of the boat.

With the throttles at both helm positions, you are always right next to the dock you are coming alongside. Changing from one set of throttles to the other is as simple as pressing a button.

With both helms are next to the cockpit the helmsperson is connected with the rest of the crew at all times, it is a very sociable boat.

With class beating bridge deck clearance she is comfortable offshore. A lower centre of gravity reduces the pitching moment. High aspect rudders set aft of the props, means even in a following sea, there is no prop cavitation. The rudders give great feedback and the relatively deep draft of 4ft 5”, enables this cat to outpoint the best of the rest. With completely sacrificial keels (she will still sail safely and well with no keels) and watertight bulkheads fore and aft, plus a divinicell foam core, this is a very safe boat.

Accommodation

The “Open” name relates to the Marc Lombard vision of combining sailing/living space unlike any other. The saloon has an aft-facing galley, fridge, and a saloon table to seat 6. Two large coach roof hatches provide ventilation at anchor (fans and air conditioning are included in the boat specification). This yacht also benefits from a convertible teak cockpit table and a convertible saloon table. This owner version (3 double cabin/2 heads and shower) has the port side dedicated to the owner’s stateroom with en suite head and shower.

Sailing the 40 Open

A fathead main (which does not have to be clipped and unclipped from the track) is hoisted effortlessly with the electric winch. The Solent jib is unfurled and sets beautifully on its self-tacking track.

In 18 knots of breeze, the 40 Open will go upwind better than 40 degrees apparent, with 8 knots boat speed, unheard of for a cruising cat without daggerboards. She comes with a bowsprit and 70 sq.m gennaker, which is as easily set as a furling genoa. This sail can be held to 60 degrees apparent in light air, and to 120 apparent in medium air, enabling boat speeds in the mid-teens.

This Nautitech 40 Open is an exceptionally well thought out catamaran, with a truly remarkable turn of speed, responsive handling to match, and her 3-cabin layout makes her very appealing to charter management and to the owner.
