Four Yachts, Countless Lessons: A Lifetime in Charter Ownership

Written By: Jamie Brown | 4-time Horizon Yacht Owner

There are some sailing stories that aren’t defined by a single passage, a single yacht, or even a single destination, but by a lifetime of returning to the water. This is one of them.

Where It All Began, A Life Shaped by Sailing

My story began, as many sailors’ stories do, long before I ever bought my first yacht. Sailing has always been a constant in my life, mainly in Scotland and the UK, where it came to represent freedom, adventure, and time well spent with friends and family. Sailing has shaped how I relax, how I challenge myself, and how I connect with those closest to me.

I first visited the Caribbean in the 1980s and had a long-standing affection for the region. The British Virgin Islands particularly stood out to me as it offers some of the best cruising in the world – short passages, sheltered waters, reliable conditions, and safe, beautiful anchorages. Equally important was the access to destinations beyond the BVI and the freedom to explore the US and Spanish Virgin Islands, cruise the sweeping arc of the Lesser Antilles, and set sail on even longer offshore passages across the Caribbean.

The Yachts That Shaped My Journey

Owning a yacht was never about status or investment; it was about something far simpler and far more valuable – creating a platform that would enable experiences, learning, and shared memories over years to come. What followed was an incredible journey over two decades marked by our four yachts – each distinct, representing an unforgettable chapter of our lives.

  • Hakuna Matata I (Bavaria 44, 2002) was disbelief and excitement – stepping aboard your own yacht in the Caribbean was an incredible feeling.
  • Hakuna Matata II (Beneteau 523, 2007) was ambition – planning, preparing and ultimately sailing her across the Atlantic with Horizon’s steady support throughout.
  • Hakuna Matata III (Bavaria 46, 2017) became a story of resilience and rediscovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.
  • Hakuna Matata IV (2019 Jeanneau 490), our current yacht, represents refinement – modern, fast, and an absolute joy to sail.

And before you ask, choosing a favourite is impossible as each yacht has been perfect for its time. There are, of course, a few non-negotiables to consider when buying a yacht:

  1. A watermaker completely transforms cruising freedom.
  2. A strong battery bank and charging capacity are essential.
  3. Personally, I love monohulls, though that is a matter of preference rather than principle. That choice is ultimately up to you.

From Ownership to Partnership

In the early days, ownership was practical – having my own properly-equipped yacht in the Caribbean that could offset some of its costs through chartering. But over time it became clear that Horizon could remove the administrative burden and allow me to focus purely on sailing. What began as a practical arrangement evolved into a long-term partnership that enabled extended cruising, varied itineraries, and complete peace of mind.

Over the years, we’ve sailed extensively throughout the BVI, across the US and Spanish Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, down the island chain through St Martin, St Barths, Anguilla, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, St Lucia, and as far south as the Grenadines and Grenada. With every sail, Horizon has supported everything from logistics and planning to boat delivery and preparation, making longer-range cruising realistic and enjoyable.

Then & Now The Magic of the BVI

Looking back to 2002 when we first entered the charter market, the BVI felt very different. Quieter, less developed and more raw. White Bay on Jost Van Dyke had no moorings, only anchoring, and the Soggy Dollar Bar was really the only place on the beach. Most yachts were monohulls, and a 40-foot boat was considered large. The islands were less developed, the infrastructure simpler, and the whole experience felt more remote and informal.

Today, the industry is far more professional, and undeniably busier. Catamarans now dominate where monohulls once prevailed. And yet, despite how much has changed, every trip to the BVI is different. While the geography may be familiar, changing crews, weather patterns, and objectives make each voyage unique. Some trips are relaxed cruises centered around family time, while others are longer, more ambitious passages. That mix, combined with the comfort of stepping aboard a boat that truly feels like home is what keeps every return fresh.

After Hurricane Irma | Resilience, Loss, and Clarity

When serious problems arise, you find out who you can rely on. In 2017, Hurricane Irma struck and devastated the BVI, delivering a personal heartbreak with the loss of Hakuna Matata II. What stood out was the speed and clarity of Horizon’s response. They immediately focused on insurance, and rebuilding, while also helping owners and staff personally. That decisive, calm approach made an enormous difference. Horizon resolved the insurance process quickly and transparently, and their leadership was hands-on throughout, removing any doubt about continuing our ownership journey with them.

Irma gave clarity to what mattered most, reinforcing a core belief about yacht ownership. It confirmed that having the right management team on the ground is the single most important factor in successful long-distance ownership.

Offering my practical support in the aftermath of Irma, assisting with hands-on work on the yachts, I had the opportunity to witness the BVI resilience in action. I was inspired by the way people improvised, helped each other, and kept moving forward. I vividly remember Horizon’s leadership working in damaged vehicles, focused entirely on rebuilding. Amid the destruction, there was humour, teamwork, and determination.

Lessons from a Lifetime of Ownership

Across four yachts and countless miles, the lessons have been clear:

  1. Professional management is essential.
  2. Guaranteed income contracts rarely result in better-maintained boats than those in the Maximum Income or Active Management charter programmes.
  3. Above all, ownership should come from a love of sailing – not for financial return.

When those fundamentals are in place, the rewards are extraordinary.

Looking back, there’s very little I would have done differently. I spent a long time choosing the right management company and would make the same decision again. Getting that choice right underpins everything else.

Over more than two decades, one constant has remained – Horizon. While their fleet, technology, and support have evolved significantly over the years, their foundation has not. Many of the same people from the very beginning are still there, bringing decades of experience and accumulated knowledge. As yachts became more sophisticated and complex, and cruising ambitions more expansive, Horizon’s depth of experience has grown alongside them.

Advice for Future Owners

For anyone considering entering the charter market today, my advice is simple:

  1. Be clear about your motivations. Do it because you want to sail, to explore, to experience – not to make money.
  2. Choose your management carefully and view the relationship as a true partnership.

Throughout the years, my partnership with Horizon has not only supported the practicalities of chartering but my broader ambitions to sail further, explore more, and take on bigger challenges. From early island-hopping adventures to longer down-island passages and even a transatlantic crossing, the practical support, advice, and confidence they provide allowed those dreams to become reality.

As for whether I’d do it all again?

Absolutely.

Sailing my own yacht across the Caribbean, and sometimes far beyond, has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. One that has shaped years of adventure, challenge, and connection. None of that would have been possible without Horizon’s long-term support of my sailing ambitions.
