Outside style and deck layout
The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 389 has a full-width drop-down transom bathing platform and the cockpit is well thought out with a good-sized drop-leaf cockpit table and twin steering wheels. The seating is decent and generously proportioned with high cockpit coamings. The chart-plotter in centrally positioned at the cockpit table.
Sail controls are easily reached with the jib sheets led straight back to a pair of Harken cockpit winches either side of the helm positions. All control lines from the mast are led to another pair of Harken winches on the coach-roof. There are line bags to keep all the tails tidy. She has a conventional traveller across the top of the coach roof with double-ended main sheeting.
Up forward the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 389 has an integrated GRP composite bow sprite incorporating the anchor roller.
The standard model features a deep draft 6’6” ft fin keel with an option of a short-winged shoal draft keel. The twin rudders give a good feel and make her a real joy to helm.
Sprayhood and bimini with led lighting are included a there is an electric windlass at the bow.
Under sail and power
The Seldén fractional rig supports aft-swept spreaders and carries a standard mainsail with Lazy bag and 110% genoa. But there is plenty of flexibility and choice of sail plan: a full battened mylar taffeta mainsail or a dacron in-mast furling mainsail are options. Forward of the mast, you can choose a mylar 135% genoa or a smaller self-tacking jib as well as an asymmetrical spinnaker.
Harken winches are in easy reach, two primary and two on the coach-roof. With a full array of Raymarine electronics and all the sail controls led neatly to the cockpit she is a breeze to sail short-handed.
The Yanmar 29HP sail-drive delivers over 6 knots at 2,600 rpm and she is responsive and easy to handle under power.
Accommodation: Space and functionality.
The living space below is very comfortable and has good functionality. The companionway has hinged doors and the steps down are shallow into the galley/salon.
The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 389’s saloon has a conventional layout with the L shaped galley to starboard featuring a double sink, a large top-loading fridge and two-burner Eno stove. The wide beam of this model and a mass of natural light adds to the spacious feel below. Forward of the galley is a generous dining area with a drop leaf table and U shaped seating to starboard. There is an aft-facing chart table to port and a full-length settee offering plenty of seating for 6 at dinner and good storage.
Available with 2 or 3 double cabins, with a good sized head and separate shower to port, she is very comfortable for 4 or 6 people on a week or two’s charter or cruise.
High-quality woodwork accents an incredibly bright, well-lit interior and there are 9 choices of interior upholstery and teak or grey cedar wood finishes.
